Police Officer Christopher Eric Ewing, 34, was killed when a drunk driver turned left in front of his patrol car at the intersection of South Cobb Drive and Oak Drive, Smyrna, just after 11:00 pm.
Smyrna Police Chief Joseph Bennett said the other driver, Robert Lorenzo Cox, 35, of Duluth, was later charged with homicide by vehicle, a felony.
Chief Bennett said Officer Ewing worked nights in the Uniform Patrol Division and had recently received a lifesaving award.
Chief Bennett said he was an employee any police chief would want to have. He said he had a “very, very bright future.”
Officer Ewing was a U.S. Air Force Reserves veteran. He had served with the Smyrna Police Department for two years and ironically he had recently applied to be part of the agency’s DUI Task Force.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
