Casey Feldman, 21, of Springfield, Pennsylvania, a senior at Fordham University – Lincoln Center and an award-winning student journalist, was fatally injured on July 17, 2009, in Ocean City, N.J. She was a pedestrian in a crosswalk when she was struck by a distracted driver.
Casey was using a crosswalk on Central Avenue, just before 5 p.m., on her way to her waitressing job on the Ocean City boardwalk when she was hit by a van. She died that evening in the trauma unit at Atlantic City Medical Center.
What Price a Human Life?
Eight months later, Anthony Lomonaco, 59, admitted to careless driving in the collision that took Casey’s life and he was fined $200 at Ocean City Municipal Court. A charge of failure to yield to a pedestrian was dropped.
Police allegedly said that Lomonaco was trying to place his iced tea in the passenger-side cup holder of his van when he accelerated through the intersection without seeing Casey on the crosswalk.
